Abhay Kumar Singh takes over as NHPC CMD, replaces Ratish Kumar

NEW DELHI: State-run hydro power giant NHPC on Monday announced appointment of Abhay Kumar Singh as the company’s Chairman & Managing Director from February 24, 2020.

It is to inform that pursuance to Ministry of Power on February24, 2020, S Abhay Kumar Singh has assumed the charge of Chairman and Managing Director of the company on February 24, 2020 till the date of his superannuation i.e. August 31, 2022, or until further orders, whichever is earlier in place of Ratish Kumar who was holding additional charge of the post of Chairman & Managing Director in addition to his duties as Director (Projects), NHPC said in a statement.

Singh (57 years) did his Civil Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (formerly Regional Engineering College, Durgapur), in 1983.

Singh started his professional journey in 1985 with joining NHPC at Tanakpur HE Project (120 MW) as Probationary Executive. His persistent learning attitude coupled with the ability to multitask, resulted in he taking up various responsibilities of the project at a very early stage. He managed various components of the project, not only in the areas of Civil but also Hydro-Mechanical.

With his strategic thinking mindset, fact-based result oriented decision-making, he is not only able to utilise the available resources to the fullest but also is able to achieve targets ahead of schedule. In his 35 years of professional life, he has played pivotal roles in the setup of many Hydroelectric projects like Tanakpur Project (120 MW), Dhauliganga Project (280 MW), Teesta low dam stage IV (160 MW), Parbati Stage II (800 MW), Parbati Stage III (520 MW) and Kishanganga HE Project (330 MW) with responsibilities ranging from construction management of key project components to the Head of the Project (HoP) and Regional Head roles.

Due to his extensive experience in hydropower development, he has developed strong capabilities in tackling complex site challenges such as managing local issues, technical & commercial issues, re-mobilizations, etc. Recognising his contribution to Hydropower development and Water Resources Sector in India, REPA (Renewable Energy Promotion Association) and ENERTIA Foundation has conferred him with ‘HYDRO RATNA’ award.

Even though a strong team leader in true sense, he strongly believes in the role of the entire team involved in delivering for the Corporation through ownership, responsibility competency, knowledge, and one company mind-set.

He is passionate about development of hydropower projects, and at the same time is open to advancements and diversification in the power sector, including the other Renewables. He is a firm believer of inculcating new technologies in scheduling, execution, monitoring and state-of-the-art equipment for faster and development of any project.

He is presently also acting as a Nominee Director in Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Development Corporation Limited.
